Floriculture or flower farming is a descipline of horticulture that deals with te cultivation of flowering and ornamental plants for gardens.The development of new varieties by plant breeding is a major occupation of floriculture.Floriculture crops include bedding plants,flowering plants,foliage plants or house plants and cut flowers.Now a days its become a great source of income in our country.Here I give some information only on cut flowers & flowering plants.
The history of floriculture in bangladesh is not so age old.Small scale flower cultivation has initially started in late seventies (1979)with the production of tuberose but large scale cultivationj was started from mid eighties(1984) in Jhikorgacha thana of Jossore district.The major production area of cut flowers are Dhaka,Chittagong,cox's bazar,Jessore,chuadanga,bogra,rangpur,kustia & mymensing.The present total area under cultivation of different cut flower is about 3350ha.About 3lakh people is engaged in flower cultivation.
Wadud,2010 reported that gladiolus cultivation occupied highest portion of land(31%) followed by tuberose (27%),marigold(20%) & rose (19%).......Lets see about these top most flower thats having economic value on next page.....
